Regular visits to a hygienist are crucial to help prevent the occurrence of gum disease and will help keep your teeth healthy in between visits and check-ups with your dentist.
Our professional and friendly dental hygienists will clean your teeth using a process called a scale and polish. Initially, they will perform a dental hygiene examination before moving on to scale the teeth to remove the build-up of plaque and tartar.
They will then polish your teeth to allow stain removal. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, they’ll offer advice on how to properly care for your teeth at home. This could include cleaning techniques, brush recommendations, and even diet recommendations to help reduce the occurrence of tooth decay.
Your dental hygienist is often the first line of defense against possible tooth decay and can also spot signs of gum disease. If this happens, they will refer you to one of our dentists for further examination, care and treatment.
To take care of your teeth to the highest possible standard, we recommend you visit a dental hygienist on a regular basis. This could be once every three months, six months, annually, or every 18 months. The frequency of your visits is, of course, dependent on your own unique clinical needs and will vary from patient to patient.
If you’re soon to undergo a complex dental treatment such as an implant, we may well recommend seeing one of our hygienists for a thorough and professional cleaning beforehand.
